we walked down the road

we walked down the road
and laid down on the moist earth.
we basked in smiles of midday light.
we smiled at each other
and pretended we were alone, too.
we were alone together for an hour that seemed forever,
for an hour that should've been forever.
we let the cold rub our faces red,
let the air race through our bodies
and the blood, too.
we walked down the road to see the trees and
let the trees see us and free us and be us,
rooted in and down and under the ground,
laying on it but under ourselves.
we ignored the cars ignoring us and
saw the people seeing us.
we saw each other in eyes of the blue sky,
under the blue and in it, too.
we saw brown and laughed,
we didn't frown.
it rubbed our shoes and chased us back,
back down the road.
when we shut the door,
we remained where we were before.
our bodies napped like babies wrapped,
and our bodies were whirring still.
